I came across the following interesting article from ARUP recently entitled:

How do you use technology to better manage a major new road bridge?

We have featured many AI-empowered sensor systems to enhance, or rather pre-empt, routine maintenance within facilities management; however, this is the best example I have seen for its use to innovate public infrastructure maintenance.  Essentially, the 2.7 kilometre Queensferry Crossing will benefit from “advanced health monitoring” designed to identify potential problems before they escalate into serious problems.

How?

The bridge is fitted with more than 2,000 sensors, which monitor the “global behaviour” of the structure and it’s environment in real time to allow for immediate and hyper-targeted inspection of any non-standard performance.
